Extreme Recycling - Write a text about it (100-150 words)

Extreme Recycling
Many of us try to do what we can to protect the environment; we may recycle bottles and reduce our use of plastic bags. But such measures did not go far enough for one California family. Dave Chameides and his family decided that for one whole year they would not throw anything away.
Organic waste such as leftover or unused food was immediately recycled; it was placed in a special bin where it was converted into compost that could be used in the garden. Other items were stored in the family basement; paper was kept in a tin box and other, non-degradable, waste accumulated in large rubbish bins. Dave even saved waste created outside his home. After a holiday in Mexico, he arrived back in the United States carrying his rubbish, including empty plastic water bottles.
However, the family found that the best way of dealing with rubbish was to create less of it. In order to achieve this, they bought staple foods like rice in bulk to cut down on the amount of packaging, and they drank only tap water to eliminate the need for bottles. Fresh produce was bought weekly at a local farmers’ market.
Dave believes that such measures were good for his family, who ate more healthily, as well as being good for the environment. He claims that throwing away our waste does not make it disappear, but simply passes the problem of disposal on to someone else. Most waste in the US is taken to landfills outside of densely populated areas. Dave worries about the damage to the environment caused by transporting the rubbish which uses energy and causes carbon emissions. He is also concerned about what will happen when these areas are filled up. He hopes his actions will inspire others to be more careful as well as reducing his own “waste” footprint on the environment.

And, indeed, the amount of waste the family generated was far less than that created by an average US family. Over the year, Chameides produced only 14.5 kilograms of rubbish, compared to the over 700 kilograms of the average American. That’s quite a saving! So, while many of us may not be prepared to go
to such extremes, perhaps we all will think more carefully about how we can reduce the amount of waste
we generate.

  1. Is something incredible what this family has done in order to take care of environment, and in addition they has eaten healthier. They are an example of people who are concerned about the dangerous situation of the environment at these moments so we should pay attention to their experience in order to make a less polluted world.
Maybe to spend a year without throwing anything away is a little bit radical for some people but we can do other things such as reduce the amount of rubbish that we produce over the year or to take care of recycle, this is something very important for our world.
To sum up, I think that we can use the example of this family to be more careful about the environment and about ourselves, because as this family, doing this we can eat healthier.

  2. It is clearly that if all humanity lifestyle change, we would save many foodstuffs and especially would pollute less. We know very well we perform harmful actions such as not recycling, throwing plastic bottles a few days of use, throwing toxic products to the water... These actions produce a lot of waste per year, and therefore this garbage must be destroyed, in form of CO2, or this garbage must be accumulated on the outskirts of the city.
Personally, if everyone would contribute a bit in order to avoid contamination, each year we could get less tons of garbage, thing very important to the environment because the environment is the only medium that really sufferers.

  3. It’s evident that if the whole world we were thinking and operating like this family our environment would be much better and we would contaminate not even the half that now. We know perfectly that if the environment is so damaged it is because of our immaturity at the moment of recycling, of not throwing residues to the sea, not taking care of our forests, etc. Even knowing all that, we do not do anything. In my house we recycle, like in other many houses any more, but other thousands of houses do not recycle and for this type of people, there happens what happens. Personally I think that it is not difficult for the people to contribute a bit, since it is good for the environment and for us, because if we do not take care of it, we will damaging ourselves.

  4. It is a well-known fact that global warming is one of the most heard and disturbing topics. It stands to reason that it is a really important issue given that it leads climate change, a natural phenomenon that is harmful to all of us.
As a result of the consciousness-raising in this important matter, levels of people who recycle have increased in the last decade. As an example, we have read the story of Dave Chameides who, as the title of the text says, did an extreme recycling in order to prove how important to recycle is.
It would be like inviable for all of us to do what Dave did, but his example is one of all the little acts which achieve a big change in our minds and therefore in our society. In some matters as recycling and other social concerns, example could be as important as practice.

  5. They say it is man who destroys man, but apparently, there are humans who intend to improve it. The example of this family is not followed by many people in the world. Few citizens recycle either remove some other materials, don’t do it. They know the situation we are in and complain about it, but do not contribute a little help to do better.
We all want to live well, we want the world to go better, but having the option to use public transport, use the proper because "it is most comfortable and fastest." I do not understand how you can change the world if only a few people try to change it.
