The Cola Wars
Most people have heard of the Cold War between the old Soviet
Union and the West. But fewer people have heard about another war,
actually a series of battles, that was also waged at about the same time. They
were fought by two giant brands in the soft drinks market, Coke and Pepsi, and
are now known collectively as the Cola Wars.
Both drinks first came on the market towards the end of the nineteenth
century, and they have been rivals for many years. It is not hard to see why:
the market for carbonated drinks is worth close to $73 billion in the United States
alone. Coke and Pepsi dominate, controlling over 70% of this market between
them – 2008 figures suggest that the Coca Cola Company accounted for nearly
43%, while PepsiCo’s share was just
over 30%.
Although these figures sound high, each brand has always wanted to
increase its sales by cutting into the share of the market controlled by its
rival. This competition erupted in the Cola Wars of the 1970s and 1980s, which
were probably triggered by the “Pepsi Challenge”. The challenge consisted of
blind tastings in which consumers were said to prefer the taste of Pepsi over
Coke. Coca-Cola retaliated by launching New Coke, a variation of its original
drink. The companies also initiated competing advertising campaigns featuring
celebrities (Paula Abdul for Coke, Michael Jackson for Pepsi), which became so
heated that Billy Joel even sang about the Cola Wars in his 1989 song, We
Didn’t Start the Fire.
Today, the war between these two giants
has taken a modern twist: who is “greener”? It seems that this battle has, at
least temporarily, been won by Coca Cola, which has promised to reduce the use
of dangerous gases in vending machines, and has invested $50 million to
research environmentally-friendly forms of refrigeration. By contrast, Pepsi
has so far only started a pilot scheme, with no long-term commitments for
change.
So, Pepsi or Coke? Most consumers have very definite, although often
quite unfounded, ideas of which is tastier. But if you can’t decide, what about
some orange juice instead?
This topic is very intersting, because talk about two enormous companies of Cola, one of the carbonated drinks most consumed of the world. When I have to decided on one, I prefer Coca-Cola, because of it have got a flavor less sweet than Pepsi coke. Moreover, Coca-Cola had always been more important in Spain, ergo, there are fewer people consuming Pepsi in Spain. However, in other countries offer Pepsi before that Coca-Cola.
ResponderEliminarOn the other hand, these companies have developed the carbonated orange juice and lemon. About these drinks I don't say the same thing, because I hate these type of drinks. Althoug, I heard several times that Kas (carbonated fruit juice of Pepsi company) is best of Fanta, Coca-cola company.
Finally, I think that Cola War was intented that people forget the Cold War.
Everybody knows that Coca cola and Pepsi are companies which always are in competition, first because of which sell more products, and know which is greener. It seems that the war between these companies was won by Coca cola, however, the competition is still.
ResponderEliminarIt’s ridiculous to think that because of make more advertisements with more celebrities, people will consume more coke than Pepsi, because if one drink is tasty, its flavor will not change if you make advertisements or put a famous person presenting the product. Maybe to be greener it’s something which can induce people to buy one of each products, but the favor will be the same.
In conclusion, this war will always be between them, and years ago Coca cola won but maybe in few years will win Pepsi or maybe will win Coca cola again, so which it’s better depend on us.
The war between Coke and Pepsi is a constant war. Nowadays the people consume more Coke than Pepsi due to his flavor, which is not as sweet as the coke. This happens in enough countries, but it doesn't want to say that the people shouldn't consume Pepsi, since in other countries different from Spain, they prefer Pepsi before Coke. This also happens with other drinks. In my opinion, this type of comparisons and "wars" is owed so much at the cost of the product, since to the quality. Finally, I believe that the war of Coke was created to conceal the cold war, war which should have importance, not as this one.
ResponderEliminarThis war has not stoped because the two dinks are fighting for sell more yet.
ResponderEliminarCoke is winning the war because this company buy a lot of advertisements and people see them and they meet more coke than pepsi, although the two drinks have a similar flavor.
People consume more coke because people know more this and the flavor is better than pepsi, but the two drinks are not healthy because they have a lot of products and some of them pollute the environment and then i preffer an other type of drink, for example orange juices because they are very healthy and they have a lot of natural products to help our organism to be healthy.
We all know that Coca-Cola and Pepsi are the two most popular and widely recognized beverage brands in the world. But who know when have been started theses wars?
ResponderEliminarAfter read this article, for the first time I know that the cola wars were over long ago. These two brands have been fighting each other for more than a century, the Pepsi Challenge marked a turning point in the Cola War. The blind taste test found that more people liked the taste of Pepsi than Coke. In response to the test, Coca Cola would reformulate its cola and launch New Coke, which was an utter disaster. After that, they initiated competing advertising campaigns, using celebrities like Paula Abdul and Michael Jackson. The aim always be the same, promote and market their brand.
In conclusion, although they are very popular, they are just carbonated drinks, so we should choose another drink like orange juice which is healthier instead of them.
The cola wars is a battle that it initiated when the drinks arrive first time in XIX.
ResponderEliminarCoca Cola and Pepsi are enemies since then. They battle for be the drink company with the best control in society.
For this, Pepsi did "Pepsi challenge", a challenge that consisted of blind tastings where consumers said that they prefered Pepsi instead of Coca cola.
By the other hand, Coca cola launched the New Coke a variation of the original drink.
Today, Coca cola is winning this war with his promised to reduce the use of dangerous gases in vending machines, and his donation $50 million to research environmentally-friendly forms of refrigeration. While Pepsi only has started a pilot scheme, with no long-term commitments for change.
This is an issue that find me very interesting. Every day there are more competitive in the market, there is always better than other brands, but each person is free to eat whatever he wants.
ResponderEliminarPepsi and Coca-cola, I think that they shouldn't both compete to see who has more consumers than the other, since by many advertising campaigns that are made with famous and other people will follow by choosing where you want to. I also think that its flavor not varies greatly from each other, but the restaurants should choose two options, because Yes, there are restaurants where they sell two drinks, but others that do not
.In conclusion, consumers are going to continue choosing the brand that see fit us and we like.
Who haven't heard about the Cola Wars? In Spain this issue isn't probably known as well as it is in the USA, but the competitiveness is obvious.
ResponderEliminarIn the first place, Coke and Pepsi are the most popular brands that appeared on the market. Besides, they both were launched at almost the same time. For this reason, one of them had had to do his best in order to achieve its aim of being in the spotlight.
However, in a battle there's always a winner, and in my opinion, Coke it is. In out country, Pepsi hasn't been popularised, so almost all the spanish people prefer Coke.
In conclusion, I think the Cola Wars will continue with the pass of the years until one of the companies fail. Meanwhile, the popularity will depend on what country we are talking about.
Personally, I prefer the brand Coca-cola, because in flavor, to my taste is better, but as i say: "One man's meat is another man's poison". However, the competition between the two brands is something that we can't be avoided, due to each brand seeks his highest benefit and for that, they must compete to be the best.
ResponderEliminarThis war among the two companies don't harm as consumers always choose between Coca-cola or Pepsi, but they never go to the other brands, and that's the problem of this war because this is causing the disappearance of the other rivals and that the benefits are shared between them.
So, in conclution, we won't be able to avoid the use of these drinks, unless catastrophe of their business strategy, because they are highly integrated products in the people lifes. The only thing that we could do, is avoid this type of carbonated drinks to drink other liquids healthier for our bodies as smoothies and juices.
